The Project
As the Covid-19 lockdown persisted throughout 2021, one of Malaysia’s fast-growing life insurance companies have decided to accelerate their digital transformation to ensure that their operations are able to adapt to this new normal.
To that end, the company has enlisted our help to execute Phase 1 of their cloud migration strategy – moving their on-premises workloads into AWS Cloud.
About The Client
Recognised as one of Malaysia’s fastest-growing life insurance companies, the Client was founded as a joint venture between one of the world’s largest financial institutions from the United States and a local bank with its own strong financial heritage in Malaysia.
Today, the Client has an extensive and diverse distribution network that comprises nine locations across the country, a national agency force, and over 400 branches.
The Challenge
As pandemic lockdowns were still in place, communications between us, the Client and the Client’s Application Vendors were limited to online video codes to adhere to government-placed restrictions.
Both sides are also required to work closely with one another to ensure that key information and requirements are conveyed cleared in order to prevent any misunderstandings or errors that may occur during the migration process.
Planning and Assessing the Workload
Comprising of a diverse team of cloud practitioners with years of industrial experience, the team proceeded to lay the groundwork of the cloud migration process. We assisted the Client by discovering and assessing the workload. This allowed the team to draft out a migration plan and strategy that took into consideration the Client’s needs as well as Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) Risk Management in Technology (RMiT) guideline.
Drafting Out the Migration Strategy
With information about the Client’s current state architecture, infrastructure and application dependencies on hand, the team was able to develop launch plans that included go-live and rollback steps. Due to an aggressive timeline and contractual dependencies on third-party application vendors, the migration strategy would rely on rehost and replatform.
Executing the Migration
Once all necessary prep work has been completed, the team worked closely together with the Client to migrate their workloads into AWS Cloud. Key applications including compute, storage and database were migrated into the Client’s AWS environment. AWS Landing Zone was also implemented to help alleviate and address concerns on security, governance and compliance. Automation, AWS Database Migration Service, and AWS CloudFormation templates were used extensively throughout the migration process.
The Results
Despite the lockdown restrictions, all parties involved in the project were able to adopt a multi-faceted approach for this project. By sharing responsibilities and taking ownership on various aspects of the migration program, Uberfusion, the Client and the Client’s Application Vendor were able to successfully deliver the project within the planned timeline and budget.
